This week, Colorado will pioneer an almost statewide election tabulation audit based on risk-limiting mathematics that is state of the art with an optimistic but practical reality catching up. This is a most timely but long sought-after addition to the toolbox available to both officials and the public to verify election accuracy and integrity. The RLA (Risk Limiting Audit of vote tabulation) will be an important part of Colorado’s evidence-based elections. This document intends to open discussions about challenging and perhaps obscure aspects of the risk-limiting tabulation audit. This is not intended as a sales pitch for RLA, although there is so much merit to RLA that deserves crystal clear explanation and promotion. Neither is this an explanation of RLA- there is prerequisite knowledge essential to understand the contents here.
